Congenital Absence of the Posterior Arch of the Atlas

Isolated anomalies of the posterior portion of the atlas are more common than is generally realized. Recognition of this anomaly is essential in order to distinguish it from clinically significant conditions which may resemble it. Three cases of deficiency in ossification of the posterior arch of the atlas recognized on radiographic studies are presented and the spectrum of radiographic manifestations discussed.
