Augmenting Resident Education at the RSNA Annual Meeting through RSNA Diagnosis Live
Abstract
For the past 2 years, radiology residency programs have been participating in an image-rich case-based competition at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois. This event takes place in the Discovery Theater at McCormick Place and utilizes the platform RSNA Diagnosis Live®, the most widely used audience response system in radiology residency programs across the United States (1,2). High-yield, board review–type questions covering all subspecialties in diagnostic radiology are presented by the moderator in a 1-hour, lively, interactive session (Figure) that provides an entertaining, engaging, educational experience for radiology trainees.

In 2017, four radiology residency programs (36 total residents) participated in the competition, with participation growing to 14 programs (62 total residents) in 2018. The format consists of a qualifying round and a final round of 20 questions each, with participating residency programs preparing the content. In 2017, two of the four residency programs advanced to the final round, with one final winner. In 2018, four of the 14 residency programs advanced to the final round, with one final winner. Scoring was performed on weighted scores based on the number of participants per institution. The programs with the highest scores advanced to the final round. The winners of the competition received a trophy for their institution.
This unique, case-based, friendly competition provides residents with an interactive learning platform whereby they have the opportunity to test their knowledge regarding the various subspecialties in diagnostic radiology. In addition, residents are able to view a diverse array of cases from different institutions across the country, to which they may not have access otherwise. The competition also provides residents with the opportunity to meet and network with residents and faculty from various institutions throughout the United States.
To qualify for the competition, each program must have an active RSNA Diagnosis Live account and a minimum of three residents from the program physically present and actively engaged in the competition. The next competition at the RSNA Annual Meeting will occur on Monday, December 2, 2019. All interested residency programs are requested to submit 10 image-based radiology questions with answers and explanations that will be used during the competition. Radiology residency programs interested in either acquiring a free RSNA Diagnosis Live account or participating in the annual residency competition should e-mail [email protected]
